The New Woman
After a simple enquiry into early-twentieth-century women’s fashion, the head of wardrobe at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake returned my call and we arranged to meet. A delightful chat and generous tour of the festival's facilities followed. Three hours later, I dashed away with a cache of loaned costumes feeling like a fugitive in a speeding getaway car.
A collaboration with women artists followed, and The New Woman arrived, offering a perspective on women of the 1920s who emerged with sexiness, sass and passion to become icons of self-expression, rebellion and independence.
(Special thanks to the Shaw Festival, and to the artists who dedicated their time and efforts to the project.)
